![]() With Domains 2 themes back, you can shape your nation just a little bit more. You have the power to shape your society outside of your chassis, be it dragon, drakon, Fetish or a skull. With scales being independent, you can make a misfortune powered god of luck, or a productive god of love. I am already annoyed that certain blessings are difficult to get simple because you don't have a proper chassis to use, I would rather that not be the case for scales as well. The idea of adding domain and domain abilities to the chassis further defines how each chassis plays and what strategies you can use, taking those options out of the players hands. I am in favor of expanding the options that the players get during pretender creation, rather than limit it even further.įurthermore, one of the downsides of Dominions 5 is that there are only 4 ways to spend design points, 2 of which are linked strongly together.Ģ) You can spend points on your magic (and because your chassis impacts your magic, you are more limited in pretender design then it seems)ģ) You can spend points on your domain (this is very limited)Ĥ) You can spend points on your scales (the only aspect that is completely separated from your chassis, so you have 100% control over). If you have MA Man, but want to play it more for the powerful knights (even the landless ones) you might take a Land of Smiths to play up that aspects.Ĭonsidering the track record of balance when it comes to Pretenders, I would prefer to keep as many things discounted from it as possible. If you have Nazca, maybe you want a pretender more focused on the cold air, and spread Cold 3 more. If you want to play EA Ermor as a precusor to MA Ermor, taking the Land of Undead Theme might work for you, both from a RPG point of view, but also as a strategy. ![]() This was suggested by Zonk, as a way of spending bless points when you nation doesn't have a strong sacred, or if you don't want to rely on your sacred, but still want to have a reason to go strong into a particular path of magic.Įither way, I like the idea of opening up some of the better old school options and applying them to Dominions 5. Not all ideas were great from Dominions 2, (I am glad that we removed taxation and castle selection) but I think these really added a lot to pretender design.Ī modern twist on the idea (to make it more in keeping with the pretenders we have today) is that instead of costing design points directly, we could have them cost blessing points.ĭesert Wind might require 3 Heat, but cost 4 Fire Bless points.Īrctic Wind might require 3 Cold but cost 4 Cold Bless points. Land of Smiths - Requires Production 3 - Pushes Production outside your domain and increases the protection on armored units by 1 (per piece) Land of Conflict - Requires Turmoil 3 - Pushes Turmoil outside your domain and generate a small number of raids on neighbors Land of Undead - Requires Death 3 - Pushes death outside your domain, and generates a small number of undead Some of these themes were available in Dominions 2, but I don't feel like we should be limited to them in Dominions 5.ĭesert Wind - Requires Heat 3 - pushes heat outside your domain and reduce the penalty for heat scales by 25%Īrctic Wind - Requires Cold 3 - Pushes Cold outside your domain and reduce the penalty for cold scales by 25% What I propose is that we bring some of the old school themes back as part of the pretender design. Desert Themes that pushed heat outside your domain (and required heat 3), Cold Domains and most. ![]() But, besides the big themes that would today be seen as the different nations by age, there were also smaller generic themes that cost only a few design points. ![]() Almost entirely different nations, but they shared pretenders. Jotenheim became Midgard, Ermor became Late Age Ermor. Instead of the three ages, you would pay a certain number of design points to alter the them of a nation. This was mostly replaced by the ages we use today. I never played much of it, but one of the cool features of the Dominions 2 was the idea of Themes. When I first got interested in Dominions, it was through the Dominions 2 Demo.
